About the Artilerriewerk Faulensee

During the Second World War, the Faulensee artillery works was built to block off the Kandergraben near Einigen on Lake Thun. The works, which went into operation in 1942, is unique among fortifications. The 160-metre-long connecting tunnel is special.

In 1941, the year of the war, the shell of the plant was completed in a record time of about six months. Afterwards, the technical installations and the installation of the weapons were completed, so that the fort could be handed over to the troops in mid-1942, ready for use. During the Cold War, the secret facility was an important base for the operational interdiction mission.

The rapid development of weapons systems, but also the changed threat, were the reason that the facility was decommissioned after a good 50 years of service, at the end of 1993. Since 2001, the interesting facility, which is unique as a building type, can be visited as a historical and cultural testimony of national importance.
